Why Lease a BMW i4?

Because it still drives like a BMW, which is not a given on an electric car. The i4 is rear wheel drive on both single motor versions, it has the steering and body control the badge is known for, and the fastback boot takes 470 litres, which is more usable than a conventional saloon's. Range runs to 377 miles and the M60 produces 601hp and reaches 62mph in 3.7 seconds.

It is the electric car for someone who did not really want an SUV. Against other badges, the Polestar 2 and the electric Mercedes-Benz C-Class are the two most people weigh against it. There is one thing about where the i4 sits in BMW's range that you should know before you sign a long contract, and it is the next section.

Is the BMW i4 Being Replaced?

Yes, and BMW has said so. In March 2026 BMW revealed the electric 3 Series, badged i3, built on its new Neue Klasse architecture. BMW's product chief described the i3 as "more or less the successor of the i4". Both cars are built at Munich, and BMW has said i4 volumes taper as i3 volumes build. The i4 also leaves the American market during 2026.

What BMW has not done is publish an end of production date, and the reporting disagrees: some expects the i4 to finish when i3 production begins, some says Munich continues into 2027. So we are not going to give you a date we cannot stand behind. Here is why it matters less than it sounds on a lease, though. You are handing the residual value risk to the funder rather than carrying it yourself, which is exactly the protection you want on a car with a named successor already revealed. You hand it back at the end whatever the used market has decided. If you would rather have the newer car, tell us and we will price the i3 alongside it so you can compare properly rather than guess.

Which BMW i4 Should You Choose?

Max DC charging180kW205kW205kW

Our pick for most people is the eDrive40, and it is not a close call. It has the longest range by a distance, it charges fastest alongside the M60, and 340PS in a rear wheel drive car is already quick. The eDrive35 is the one to look at twice: it is the only i4 with slower charging, at 180kW against 205kW, and because the battery is the headline difference the charging gap is easy to miss. On a long journey that is a real penalty on top of the shorter range.

Two things have changed that catch people out. The xDrive40 has gone. It was only orderable between mid 2024 and mid 2025, so if you want an all wheel drive i4 that is not the M car, there isn't one any more in the UK. And the M50 was replaced by the M60 in a mid 2025 update, so the flagship is now 601hp rather than the M50's figure. Some leasing sites still list an M50, which is a derivative their feed has not dropped rather than a car you can order. Watch for American pages too: the United States still gets an xDrive40 that we do not.

Why BMW i4 Range Figures Vary So Much

This is the single most useful thing to understand before you compare quotes, because the spread is not rounding. Wheels and option packs change the official range on the same car. Taking the eDrive40 as the example:

eDrive40 specification WLTP range
Sport377 miles
M Sport370 miles
M Sport with the Tech and Pro packs363 miles

So the 377 mile headline belongs to the Sport on the smallest wheels, which is the version fewest people actually order. Most i4s leave as an M Sport, where the honest figure is nearer 370, and ticking the option packs takes another seven miles off. None of that is BMW being misleading, it is how WLTP works, but it does mean a quote showing 377 miles and a quote showing 363 can be the same car specified differently. Tell us which wheels and packs you want and we will give you the figure for that car rather than the brochure's best case.

BMW i4 Boot Space and Practical Figures

Measurement Figure
Boot, seats up470 litres
Boot, seats down1,290 litres
Front compartment under the bonnetNone
Towing, braked1,600kg
Towing, unbraked750kg
Seats and doors5 and 5

The fastback tailgate is the i4's quiet advantage over a conventional electric saloon. 470 litres is a good figure at this size, and because the whole rear glass lifts rather than just a bootlid, awkward loads go in far more easily than the number suggests. There is no front compartment under the bonnet, so charging cables live in the boot. At 1,600kg braked it also tows more than most electric cars of this size, though expect range to fall substantially with a trailer on the back. Always check the figure for your specific trailer against the vehicle's own plated weights.

How Safe Is the BMW i4?

We are going to be straight with you, because this is the one place the i4 does not do as well as its rivals and most pages skip it. The i4 holds four Euro NCAP stars, not five, from a test in 2022. The detail matters, though: it scored 87 per cent for adult occupant protection and 87 per cent for child occupant protection, which are five star numbers. What cost it the fifth star was safety assistance, at 64 per cent, where it was marked down on occupant status monitoring and lane support, with emergency lane keeping rated marginal.

So the honest summary is that this is a driver assistance result rather than a crash protection result. In an accident the i4 protects its occupants as well as most five star cars of its era. If what you want is a car with the most capable assistance systems, this is not the strongest in the class, and the i5 is the newer design within BMW's own range. One further point worth knowing on a long contract: Euro NCAP results lapse after six years, so the i4's 2022 rating runs out at the end of 2028, which falls inside a four year agreement signed today.

Has the BMW i4 Been Facelifted?

Twice, in effect, and they are routinely confused with one another. The facelift was revealed in April 2024, reaching the UK that July, and it changed the styling, the interior and the display. It did not change the range or the power. The figures changed with a separate model year update announced in May 2025 and in production from that July, which fitted silicon carbide inverters, cut consumption by about four and a half per cent, added up to 22 kilometres of range, and replaced the M50 with the M60. So if you read that the facelift improved the i4's range, that is the wrong update being credited. Anything quoting pre July 2025 range figures is describing the earlier car.

Leasing a BMW i4

Two numbers drive most of your monthly cost: the initial rental and your annual mileage. A larger initial rental brings the monthly figure down, and the mileage you choose sets the contract, so give us the real number. Excess mileage is charged at the end of the agreement.

An electric car of this kind is a strong case for business leasing or salary sacrifice, because fully electric company cars attract far lower Benefit in Kind company car tax than petrol or diesel and the saving scales with the value of the car. Rates are set per tax year and rise on a published schedule, so check the current figure before you commit. We are a credit broker rather than a tax adviser, so your accountant should confirm your own position. Our electric against petrol comparison works through the running costs.

The run out is the reason we would lease this car rather than buy it. A model with a named successor already revealed carries real used value uncertainty, and on a lease that sits with the funder rather than with you. Our guide to electric car residual values explains how it gets priced in. If you would like to see the i4 and the newer i3 side by side before you decide, just ask and we will quote both.

BMW i4 Leasing FAQs

Up to 377 miles on the eDrive40, which is the longest range version. The eDrive35 manages up to 316 miles on its smaller 70.3kWh battery and the M60 around 336 miles. Those figures vary with wheels and option packs, so an eDrive40 M Sport is nearer 370 miles and one with the Tech and Pro packs nearer 363.

Three: the eDrive35 and eDrive40, both rear wheel drive, and the M60 xDrive with 601hp and all wheel drive. The xDrive40 was only offered between mid 2024 and mid 2025 and is no longer available, and the M50 was replaced by the M60 in a mid 2025 update.

Yes. BMW revealed the electric 3 Series, badged i3, in March 2026 and its product chief described it as more or less the successor to the i4. Both are built at Munich and i4 volumes taper as the i3 builds up. BMW has not published an end of production date, and the reporting on when that will be disagrees.

Up to 205kW on the eDrive40 and the M60, and up to 180kW on the eDrive35. That makes the entry car the slowest charging as well as the shortest range, which is easy to miss because the battery size is the headline difference between them.

Only as the M60 xDrive. The eDrive35 and eDrive40 are rear wheel drive, which is part of why the i4 drives the way it does. The xDrive40, which gave you all wheel drive without the M car, is no longer offered in the UK.

It holds four Euro NCAP stars from a 2022 test, not five. The crash protection scores were strong at 87 per cent for both adult and child occupants, and what cost it the fifth star was safety assistance at 64 per cent, where it was marked down on occupant monitoring and lane support. Euro NCAP results lapse after six years, so this one expires at the end of 2028.

470 litres with the rear seats up and 1,290 litres with them folded. The whole rear screen lifts as a tailgate rather than just a bootlid, so awkward loads go in more easily than the figure suggests. There is no front compartment under the bonnet, so charging cables live in the boot.

Yes, up to 1,600kg braked and 750kg unbraked, which is more than many electric cars of this size. Expect range to fall substantially with a trailer attached, and check the figure for your specific trailer against the vehicle's own plated weights.

Because that is how the industry vehicle database names the derivative. BMW's own figure is 442kW, which it quotes as 601hp, and 440kW is the rounded number in the CAP record that leasing systems use. It is the same car either way.

No, a separate update did. The facelift arrived in the UK in July 2024 and changed the styling, interior and display without touching range or power. The model year update from July 2025 fitted new inverters, cut consumption by about four and a half per cent and added range, and it also replaced the M50 with the M60.

Size and age. The i5 is the larger electric 5 Series saloon and the newer design, where the i4 is based on the 4 Series Gran Coupe. The i4 has the fastback tailgate and is the more compact of the two, and the i5 is the roomier car with the more recent safety and assistance equipment.

LetsLease is a credit broker rather than the lender. We arrange the agreement and place it with a funder such as Lex Autolease, Novuna, Ayvens or Santander, and that funder owns the vehicle and holds the agreement with you. Because we work across several funders rather than one, we can compare how each of them prices the same car.
