Mazda has spent twenty years refusing to follow the industry, and the results are consistently better to drive than the badge suggests. Where most brands downsized to small turbocharged engines, Mazda engineered its way around the problem, and where most interiors chase screen size, Mazda kept physical controls and a proper driving position.
The practical upshot is that a Mazda usually feels a class above its price from the driver's seat. It also means the engine names take a minute to decode, which the section below does.
Eight models, and almost no overlap between them.
The Mazda2 Hybrid is a 116ps self-charging full hybrid, so it never needs plugging in. The Mazda3 is the hatchback and saloon, and one of the best looking cars in its class.
The CX-30 is the compact one, the CX-5 the family staple and Mazda's biggest seller here. Both petrol mild hybrids.
The CX-60 and seven seat CX-80 are the premium end, with a 327ps plug-in hybrid or a 254ps diesel, all wheel drive and automatic only.
The Mazda6e is a 258ps single motor electric saloon, offered in Takumi and Takumi Plus. The only fully electric car in the range.
The MX-5 is the best selling two seat sports car ever made, as a soft top Roadster or the folding hard top RF, with 132ps or 184ps petrol engines.
Mazda names its engines rather than badging them by size, and the letter at the end is the part that matters:
The Mazda2 Hybrid is a self-charging full hybrid that never needs a cable, and the Mazda6e is fully electric. For company car drivers the plug-in hybrid and the 6e sit far lower on benefit in kind than the petrols, and rates change each tax year, so take the current figures from your accountant.
One ladder runs across the range, though not every model gets every rung. In ascending order it is Prime-Line, Centre-Line, Exclusive-Line, Homura, Homura Plus, Takumi and Takumi Plus.
The split is one of character rather than straight hierarchy at the top. Homura is the sporting look, with the darker exterior treatment. Takumi is the luxury flavour, favouring lighter interior materials and comfort kit. They sit at similar levels, so it is a taste decision rather than a better or worse one.
One thing worth checking before you settle on a model. The Mazda6e is the only fully electric car Mazda currently offers here, and it is a saloon. If you want an electric Mazda SUV, that is not available yet, and the honest answer is to look at the plug-in hybrid CX-60 or CX-80 instead, or at another brand. We would rather tell you that up front.
Because they drive well, and that is not a small claim in a market where most cars in these classes are competent and forgettable. Mazda puts real engineering effort into steering feel, seating position and how a car responds, and people who notice those things tend to keep coming back.
The interiors are the other reason. Mazda resisted putting everything on a touchscreen, so the controls you use while moving are still physical, which is better and safer to use than the alternative. It is Mazda's name for its engine and chassis engineering. The letter afterwards tells you the type: G is the petrol mild hybrid, X is the clever petrol that uses compression ignition for diesel-like efficiency, D is the diesel mild hybrid, and PHEV is the plug-in hybrid.
Yes, the Mazda6e, a 258ps single motor electric saloon offered in Takumi and Takumi Plus. It is currently the only fully electric model in the UK range, so if you want an electric SUV from Mazda, that is not available yet.
The Mazda2 Hybrid is usually the most affordable way into the range. It is a 116ps self-charging full hybrid, so it never needs plugging in, which makes it a sensible choice if you have nowhere to charge.
They sit at similar levels but point in different directions. Homura is the sporting treatment with darker exterior detailing. Takumi is the luxury flavour, favouring lighter interior materials and comfort equipment. It is a taste decision rather than one being above the other.
The CX-80, which is the largest model in the range. It comes with either the 327ps plug-in hybrid or the 254ps diesel, both all wheel drive and automatic only.
The 254ps diesel suits long distance and towing work, where it will be more economical and more relaxed. The 327ps plug-in hybrid is faster and much cheaper on company car tax if you can charge regularly, and rates change each tax year. If you cannot plug it in, the diesel is the more honest choice.
For some people, yes. It is a strict two seater with a small boot, but it is reliable, cheap to run and available as the soft top Roadster or the folding hard top RF, which is quieter and more secure. Worth being realistic about the luggage space before you commit.
LetsLease is a credit broker rather than the lender. We arrange the agreement and place it with a funder such as Lex Autolease, Novuna, Ayvens or Santander, and that funder owns the vehicle and holds the agreement with you. Because we work across several funders rather than one, we can compare how each prices the same car.
