Which BYD Should You Lease?

BYD's range has grown quickly, so here is where most drivers land.

Small and city-friendly

The Dolphin Surf is the compact, low-cost way into an electric BYD, with the slightly larger Dolphin adding more space and range.

Compact SUVs

The Atto 2 and Atto 3 pack a lot of standard kit into a practical, higher-riding shape.

Electric saloon

The Seal is a sharp-value electric saloon that goes up against cars costing a good deal more.

Family SUVs

For more space, the Sealion 5, Sealion 7 and Seal U step things up.

Electric or Plug-in Hybrid BYD?

A lot of people assume BYD is all-electric, but the range actually splits two ways. Models like the Dolphin, Atto 3, Seal and Sealion 7 are fully electric. Others, such as the Seal U and Seal 6, use BYD's DM-i plug-in hybrid system.

If you can charge at home, a fully electric BYD will be the cheapest to run and the most tax-efficient as a company car. If you cannot always charge, or you do regular long motorway trips, a DM-i plug-in hybrid gives you electric running for shorter journeys and a petrol engine for the rest, so you are never caught out.

For business drivers, the fully electric models attract the lowest Benefit-in-Kind company car tax, which is what makes them so strong on salary sacrifice and business leasing. The exact rate changes each tax year, so check the current figure, and treat this as general information rather than tax advice.

Specification and the Blade Battery

BYD's value comes from how much kit is included as standard. Even entry models tend to come well equipped, so with BYD you are usually choosing more on battery size and range than on chasing an equipment upgrade. Higher trims mainly add range, all-wheel drive or extra comfort features.

The other thing worth knowing is the Blade Battery. BYD makes its own batteries, and the Blade design uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry that is known for safety and a long, stable life. It is one of the reasons BYD can offer competitive pricing and back its cars with a long warranty, and on a lease it means battery health is one less thing to think about.

Getting Your Lease Terms Right

Two numbers decide most of your monthly cost: the initial rental and your annual mileage. A larger initial rental brings the monthly down, but only commit to a big upfront payment if you are confident you will see the full contract through. Be honest about mileage too, because going over your agreed limit means excess charges at the end.

With an electric BYD, the single biggest factor in your running costs is how you charge. Charging at home overnight is far cheaper than relying on public chargers, so it is worth thinking about a home charge point if you have off-street parking. If you need a car quickly, check our in stock cars before placing an order.

Our tip: tell us how and where you would charge, and your real mileage, and we will steer you between a fully electric BYD and a DM-i hybrid so you end up with the one that actually fits your driving.

It is BYD's own battery, using lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry in a "blade" design that is known for safety and a long, stable life. BYD is one of the world's largest battery and EV makers, so it builds the batteries that go into its cars.

BYD has made batteries since the 1990s and is now one of the biggest electric car manufacturers in the world. It is newer to the UK than the established names, but it is far from a start-up, and the cars come with a long manufacturer warranty for peace of mind.

Yes. The fully electric BYDs attract low Benefit-in-Kind company car tax, which makes them very cost-effective on salary sacrifice and business leasing. Check the current rate before deciding, as this is general information rather than tax advice.

Your BYD lease includes road tax for the full contract and the manufacturer warranty, plus free UK delivery. Servicing is not included as standard, but you can add a maintenance package to cover it for a fixed monthly amount.

The upfront payment is an initial rental, usually the equivalent of three, six or nine months. A larger initial rental lowers your monthly cost. If you would rather keep cash back, ask about our no deposit options.
