Why the A2 matters now

The A2 e-tron is the answer, though not a like for like one. It is an indirect replacement for both, and Audi is positioning it as the electric alternative to the petrol A3 rather than a straight A1 substitute.
The name is a deliberate nod. The original A2 from the early 2000s was an aluminium-bodied oddity built around efficiency, admired by engineers and largely ignored by buyers. Two decades on, efficiency sells, and the thinking behind that car suddenly looks less eccentric.
What Audi has confirmed so far
Audi's own preliminary figures put the A2 e-tron on a 61kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, with around 58kWh of that usable. LFP chemistry is the interesting choice here. It is generally more durable than the nickel-based packs used in most EVs and is happy being charged to 100% regularly, which suits drivers who would rather not think about battery care.
The headline claim is a provisional WLTP range of more than 380 miles, which would make this the most efficient Audi ever built. That comes from aerodynamics as much as battery size, with a drag coefficient of 0.24 and a quoted consumption figure of 12.8kWh per 100km when fitted with the efficiency package. As always with pre-launch WLTP numbers, treat them as a laboratory best case rather than what you will see on a wet motorway in January.
Underneath, it uses MEB+, a revised version of the platform that already sits under the Q4 e-tron, the Volkswagen ID.3, the Cupra Born, the Skoda Elroq and the Ford Capri. That is worth knowing rather than holding against it. A proven platform tends to mean fewer early-life problems, and the original A2's bespoke aluminium structure was part of what made it too expensive to sell.
What is still unknown
Quite a lot, and it is worth being straight about that. UK specifications have not been confirmed. Motor outputs have been widely reported but not announced. Audi UK has not confirmed when order books open, and the configurator is expected to follow the global launch rather than arrive alongside it. Reports point to UK sales starting in 2027, though nothing firm has been published.
Pricing is the other open question. Audi has signalled that this is meant to be its most accessible EV, and coverage so far has pointed at a starting point somewhere below the Q4 e-tron by a meaningful margin. Until UK prices are published, anything more specific is guesswork.
What it means if you are leasing
If you need a car now, the A2 is not your car
A launch this autumn with UK deliveries some way behind it means you would be waiting a long time. The sensible comparison today is the A3 if you want petrol, or an existing compact EV if you are ready to switch. The Volvo EX30, MINI Aceman and Alfa Romeo Junior all occupy similar ground and are available to lease now.
If you can wait, a shorter lease now buys you options
Taking a two year agreement on something today lines you up to move onto an A2 when it lands, without committing to a car you have not sat in. That flexibility is one of the genuine advantages of leasing over buying when a segment is changing this quickly.
For company car drivers, the electric case remains strong
Fully electric cars continue to attract far lower benefit-in-kind rates than petrol equivalents, which is why so many business leases have shifted that way. Those rates are legislated to rise over the coming years, so the advantage narrows over time rather than staying fixed. Our take
The A2 e-tron looks like a sensible car built for a market that finally wants what it offers. A small premium EV with genuine long-distance range, on a platform that is already well understood, at a price meant to undercut everything else wearing four rings. The risk is the same one the original faced: small cars carry big-car development costs, and premium buyers have a habit of talking about compact efficiency and then ordering an SUV.
