Who Are Lepas?
Lepas is the newest UK brand from Chery International, and the fourth the company has launched here after Omoda, Jaecoo and the Chery badge itself. Chery arrived in Britain in 2024 and has grown faster than almost anything in the market since: in July 2026, Omoda and Jaecoo between them outsold Hyundai, Nissan and Ford.
Lepas is positioned differently from its siblings. Where Omoda leans practical and Jaecoo slightly more premium, Lepas is pitched on design, and it is electrified across the entire range from launch rather than adding electric versions later. Every model is either a plug-in hybrid or fully electric.
Three SUVs are planned for the UK: the flagship L8 plug-in hybrid, the fully electric L6, and the compact electric L4 aimed at urban driving.

The L8's plug-in hybrid figures are the standout in the range. Up to 66 miles of electric range is longer than most plug-in hybrids on sale, which matters because a plug-in hybrid only earns its cost if its electric range genuinely covers your daily driving. Lepas also quotes 67.2mpg with the battery depleted, which addresses the usual criticism of the type: that they turn thirsty once the charge has gone.
The L6 and L4 are fully electric, so they are cheapest to run if you can charge at home and attract by far the lowest company car tax of the three. Company car tax rates are set each tax year and do change, so confirm the current bands with your accountant before you order. The decision between them is the same one it always is: if you can charge reliably, go fully electric. If you cannot, the L8 makes more sense, but only if you will still plug it in most nights, because an uncharged plug-in hybrid uses more fuel than an equivalent petrol car.
Leasing a Brand This New
The standard warning about a brand nobody has heard of is about resale value, and it is a fair one. Nobody knows what a three year old Lepas will be worth, because there are no three year old examples. If you buy one, that uncertainty sits entirely with you, and depreciation is the largest single cost of running a new car.
On a lease it is not your risk. The finance company owns the vehicle, takes a view on its future value and carries the consequences if they are wrong. You pay an agreed monthly rental and hand the car back regardless. So the strongest argument against a new brand largely disappears when you lease rather than buy, which is the opposite of the advice you will read elsewhere.
What does not disappear is the practical side. There is no UK reliability record yet, no independent long term reviews, and the dealer network is being built rather than established, with stated plans for 60 standalone UK sites by the end of 2026. Check where your nearest one is, and drive one before committing, because ride and handling is where new arrivals from this part of the market have most often drawn criticism.
