The Polestar 5 at a Glance

The Polestar 5 is the company's flagship, a four-door electric grand tourer built on its own bonded aluminium platform rather than one borrowed from elsewhere in the group. It is the car Polestar has been building towards since it started.

It is aimed squarely at the Porsche Taycan and the Audi e-tron GT, and it is the first Polestar that feels designed from the ground up rather than engineered from an existing car.

It Has No Euro NCAP Rating

The Polestar 5 has not been tested by Euro NCAP. There is no rating, poor or otherwise, and the ratings held by the Polestar 2, 3 and 4 do not transfer to it because it is a different car on a different platform.

This is normal for a new low volume flagship and does not suggest a problem, but it is the honest caveat on an otherwise very complete car: there is no independent crash rating to check here yet. If a current independent rating matters to you, that is a reason to consider something already tested.

The Platform Is the Point

The 5 uses a bonded aluminium structure developed specifically for it. The short version of why that matters: it is stiff and comparatively light for a car of this size and battery capacity, which is the hardest problem in large electric cars.

The result is a car that handles with more precision than its dimensions suggest, and that rides well because the suspension is not fighting a flexing body. It is a genuine engineering achievement rather than a marketing line.

Living With It

It is a grand tourer, so it is built for covering long distances quickly and quietly, and it does that very well. Four adults fit properly, which is more than can be said for some rivals.

Charging is quick, which matters most on exactly the journeys this car is built for. Our guide to electric vehicle charging networks covers which networks deliver reliable high speeds, because on a car like this the charger is more often the limit than the car.

As a company car the benefit in kind treatment on electric vehicles makes a car at this level dramatically cheaper than a petrol equivalent, which is why most are leased through a business. Company car leasing and electric vehicles explains how that works, and business car leasing covers the contract side.

How It Compares

Against the Taycan and the e-tron GT it is the newer design and the more comfortable car, while the Porsche remains the sharper one to drive. Against the rest of the Polestar range it is a clear step up in size, refinement and ambition.

It is worth comparing against the Polestar 4 as well, because the 4 is a very good car for a good deal less money, and not everyone needs what the 5 adds.

How the Polestar 5 Is Ordered

Two variants, then packs. There is no conventional trim ladder.

What it is
Dual motorThe long range car. Polestar quotes a WLTP target of 421 miles
PerformanceThe fast one. WLTP target of 346 miles, and the only way to get MagneRide adaptive dampers
Launch editionBundles the Pilot pack, the Climate pack and a graphical head-up display with an infrared windscreen
Pilot packPilot Assist and lane change assist, on top of the standard adaptive cruise control
Climate packHeated rear seats, heated steering wheel, heated wiper blades
Nappa upgradeSport seats with 14-way adjustment, ventilation and massage, in Bridge of Weir leather
MagneRide cannot be optioned onto the Dual motor

The adaptive dampers are Performance-only. You cannot specify your way to them on the long range car, so if the ride and body control matter most to you, that choice is made at the variant rather than on the options list. Equally, the Dual motor goes 75 miles further on paper, so this is a genuine trade rather than a simple upgrade.

Those range figures are Polestar's own WLTP targets, and Polestar's own page notes real world range will normally be lower. Treat them as a comparison between the two variants rather than as a promise.

Living With It, Honestly

Detail
Seating4+1 rather than a true five seater. The middle rear seat is small and suits short trips only
Rear visibilityNo rear window. A digital rear-view mirror only, which catches people out on a first drive
Boot365 litres, 1,128 litres with the seats folded, plus a 62 litre compartment under the bonnet
Towing1,800kg braked on both variants, with a semi-electric towbar as the only option
Charging800V architecture, up to 350kW DC, roughly 10 to 80 per cent in 22 minutes

The boot opening is saloon-shaped and fairly narrow, so the 365 litre figure is less usable than the same number in a hatchback. The frunk takes cables, which is where most people put them.

Sit in the back and reverse it before you commit. Neither the middle seat nor the camera mirror is a problem once you know about them, but both are easier to accept before you have signed than after.

Warranty and Running Costs

Item Detail
Warranty3 years or 60,000 miles, conditional on the Polestar service plan having been followed
Battery warranty8 years or 100,000 miles, repaired or replaced free if state of health drops below 70%
Corrosion12 years
Battery112kWh, 800V
The warranty has a condition attached, so read it

Polestar states the vehicle warranty applies where the service plan has been followed. On a lease that is worth settling at the start rather than at the first service, because a missed or non-Polestar service is the kind of thing that only becomes a problem at the point you need to claim. Confirm with us who is servicing the car and on what plan before delivery.

On a car at this level the benefit in kind treatment on electric vehicles is usually the deciding factor, which is why most are leased through a business. Company car leasing and electric vehicles covers how that works and business car leasing covers the contract.

How Safe Is the Polestar 5?

There is no Euro NCAP rating for the Polestar 5. It has not been tested.

The ratings held by the Polestar 2, 3 and 4 do not carry over, because the 5 is a different car on a different platform. There is no partial result and no provisional score.

Normal for a new flagship, but worth saying out loud

Euro NCAP works through high volume cars first, so a low volume flagship arriving recently is often untested for a while. It does not suggest a problem, and the bonded aluminium structure is a serious piece of engineering. It does mean that if you are used to checking an independent rating, there is not one here yet, and you are relying on Polestar's own testing.

If a current independent rating is part of how you choose, tell us and we will put tested alternatives in front of you rather than talk you into this one.

Boot Space

Measure Litres
Boot, seats up365
Seats folded1,128
Under the bonnet62

365 litres is modest for a car of this size, and the saloon-style opening is fairly narrow, so the figure is less usable than the same number in a hatchback. The 62 litre frunk is one of the larger ones and takes the cables comfortably.

Combined with the 4+1 seating, the Polestar 5 is better understood as a fast and extremely comfortable car for two or three people than as a family car.

Leasing a Polestar 5

Dual motor or Performance is the real decision, and it is a genuine trade rather than an upgrade. The Dual motor goes around 75 miles further on paper. The Performance is the only way to get the MagneRide adaptive dampers, and you cannot option your way to them.

Settle the servicing question before delivery. Polestar states the vehicle warranty applies where the Polestar service plan has been followed, so agree who is servicing the car and on what plan at the start rather than at the first service reminder.

Most go out on business contract hire for the benefit in kind treatment. Company car leasing and electric vehicles covers that, and it is worth driving the Polestar 4 before you commit, because it is a very good car for a good deal less.

Polestar 5 Leasing FAQs

It does not have one. The Polestar 5 has not been tested by Euro NCAP, and the ratings held by the Polestar 2, 3 and 4 do not transfer because the 5 sits on a different platform. That is normal for a new low volume flagship, but if a current independent rating matters to you there is not one to check yet.

It uses a bonded aluminium structure developed specifically for this car rather than one shared with the rest of the range. It is stiff and comparatively light for a car of this size and battery capacity, which is why it handles with more precision than its dimensions suggest.

The Polestar is the newer design and the more comfortable long distance car, with a genuinely usable rear seat. The Taycan remains the sharper car to drive. Which you prefer usually comes down to whether you value comfort or involvement more.

For a car at this level, yes. The benefit in kind treatment on electric vehicles makes it far cheaper than a petrol equivalent of similar performance, which is why most are leased through a business rather than privately.

The 4 is a very good car for considerably less money, and for many people it is enough. The 5 is larger, more refined and more capable as a long distance GT. If you do big mileages in comfort the 5 justifies itself, otherwise the 4 is the value choice.

Polestar quotes WLTP targets of 421 miles for the Dual motor and 346 miles for the Performance. Those are targets rather than promises, and Polestar's own page notes real world range will normally be lower, so treat them as a comparison between the two variants rather than a figure to plan journeys around.

It is a 4+1. The middle rear seat is small and short-trip only, so if you regularly carry three in the back it is not the car. Worth sitting in before you commit, along with the digital rear-view mirror, since there is no rear window.

1,800kg braked on both the Dual motor and the Performance, with a semi-electric towbar as the only towing option. Unlike the Polestar 4, the towing limit does not change between variants.

Yes. Polestar states the three year or 60,000 mile vehicle warranty applies where the Polestar service plan has been followed. On a lease it is worth settling who services the car and on what plan before delivery, because a missed or non-Polestar service tends only to surface as a problem at the point you need to claim.

There is no Euro NCAP rating for it. The Polestar 5 has not been tested, and the ratings held by the Polestar 2, 3 and 4 do not carry over because the 5 sits on a different platform. That is normal for a newly launched low volume flagship and does not suggest a problem, but there is no independent result to check.

365 litres with the seats up, 1,128 litres folded, plus a 62 litre compartment under the bonnet, which is one of the larger frunks around. The boot opening is saloon-shaped and fairly narrow, so the figure is less usable than the same number would be in a hatchback.

LetsLease is a credit broker rather than the lender. We arrange the agreement and place it with a funder such as Lex Autolease, Novuna, Ayvens or Santander, and that funder owns the vehicle and holds the agreement with you. Because we work across several funders rather than one, we can compare how each prices the same car.
