Why Lease a Toyota bZ4X?

The bZ4X's first attempt was not Toyota's finest hour. The one on sale now is a different proposition. The 2026 update brought a larger battery, considerably more power, a 22kW AC charger on higher grades, battery pre-conditioning as standard and a properly redesigned interior with a 14 inch screen. The headline is up to 352 miles of WLTP range, which puts it among the longer legged electric SUVs of its size.

What it brings that most electric rivals do not is Toyota's approach to batteries. The battery warranty runs to 8 years or 100,000 miles, and on top of that Toyota's Battery Care Programme guarantees 70 per cent of original capacity for up to 10 years or 650,000 miles, subject to an annual battery health check. That is a long way beyond what the rest of the industry offers.

The Four Versions

Icon, front wheel drive

123kW (166bhp) on the smaller 57.7kWh battery. 274 miles WLTP, 11kW AC charging, 0 to 62 in 8.6 seconds.

Design, front wheel drive

165kW (221bhp) on the 73.1kWh battery. 352 miles WLTP, 11kW AC, 0 to 62 in 7.4 seconds. The range champion of the line-up.

Excel, front wheel drive

The same 165kW (221bhp) and 73.1kWh battery, but 319 miles because of the larger wheels and extra kit. Gains the faster 22kW AC charger.

Excel, all wheel drive

252kW (338bhp) from a motor on each axle. 292 miles, 22kW AC, and 0 to 62 in 5.1 seconds, which is faster than the car looks.

Note the 352 mile figure is specifically the Design on 18 inch wheels. Toyota says so in its own footnote. If you want the maximum range, that is the version to ask for, and stepping up to Excel costs you 33 miles on paper before you have driven anywhere. Toyota quotes the 57.7kWh and 73.1kWh capacities as the battery's total size; roughly 54kWh and 69kWh of that is usable.

Charging, and What to Expect in Practice

DC charging peaks at 150kW on every version, and Toyota quotes 10 to 80 per cent in 28 minutes. That 28 minutes comes with a condition worth reading: it applies when the battery has been pre-heated. Pre-conditioning is standard and can run manually, on a schedule, or automatically when you set a rapid charger as a navigation destination, which is the single most useful change the update made. A heat pump is also standard on every grade, which helps in winter.

Now the part to be honest about, because it is the bZ4X's weak spot and the update did not remove it. The DC peak did not improve at all. Toyota confirms it stays at 150kW, and its chief engineer has said going faster would mean moving to an 800 volt system, which this car does not have. And real world range still lands well under the official figure: Electrifying tested the Excel front wheel drive in cold December weather and averaged 262 miles against the claimed 319, while GreenCarGuide ran the same version on 20 inch wheels for a week and saw 237 miles. The bigger battery and the pre-conditioning have made it much more predictable, especially in winter, but if you plan long motorway runs around 319 miles you will be disappointed. Plan around the tested figures and you will not be.

Practicality, and the Touring

The boot holds 452 litres, measured by Toyota including the space under the deck board with it in the lower position. There is no front boot: the powertrain fills the space under the bonnet, so the charging cables live in the main boot. The rear seats do not fold completely flat because of where the battery sits, and they can only be released from the shoulder catch on the backrest rather than from the boot.

If the boot is the sticking point, the bZ4X Touring is a separate estate bodied model with a 669 litre boot, a slightly larger battery and up to 366 miles of range. It comes in Design and Excel grades only. Worth pricing both if space matters.

bZ4X on Business

As a fully electric car the bZ4X sits in the lowest company car tax band, which is why it often works out very differently through a business than privately. Those bands change each tax year and are rising, so take the current figures from your accountant rather than from any website. If you are quoting it as a company car or on salary sacrifice, ask us for the official range and CO2 on the exact grade and we will put them alongside the rental.

Toyota bZ4X Leasing FAQs

Up to 352 miles WLTP for the Design front wheel drive on 18 inch wheels, 319 for the Excel front wheel drive, 292 for the Excel all wheel drive and 274 for the entry Icon. Independent tests of the 319 mile Excel have returned between 237 and 262 miles in cold weather, so plan around those rather than the official figure.

Up to 150kW on a DC rapid charger, with Toyota quoting 10 to 80 per cent in 28 minutes when the battery has been pre-heated. Pre-conditioning is standard and can trigger automatically when you navigate to a rapid charger. On AC, Icon and Design take 11kW and Excel takes 22kW.

No, and that is worth knowing. The DC peak is unchanged at 150kW because the car uses a 400 volt system. What the update did improve is consistency: standard battery pre-conditioning and a heat pump mean you are far more likely to actually achieve the quoted charging time in winter.

The battery is covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles. Separately, Toyota's Battery Care Programme guarantees 70 per cent of original capacity for up to 10 years or 650,000 miles, subject to an annual battery health check. The vehicle warranty itself is 3 years or 60,000 miles.

Icon, Design and Excel. Icon uses the smaller 57.7kWh battery, Design and Excel the larger 73.1kWh one, and Excel is also offered with all wheel drive. The Excel Premium Pack is an option rather than a separate trim.

452 litres, which Toyota measures including the space beneath the deck board in its lower position. There is no boot under the bonnet, so charging cables travel in the back. The rear seats do not fold completely flat because of the battery underneath them.

The Touring is a separate estate bodied model with a much larger 669 litre boot, a slightly bigger battery and up to 366 miles of range. It is offered in Design and Excel grades only, with no Icon version.

LetsLease is a credit broker rather than the lender. We arrange the agreement and place it with a funder such as Lex Autolease, Novuna, Ayvens or Santander, and that funder owns the vehicle and holds the agreement with you. Because we work across several funders rather than one, we can compare how each prices the same car.
