Why Lease a Toyota C-HR+?

First, the name. The C-HR+ is a fully electric SUV and it is a different car from the hybrid C-HR, not an electric version of it. Toyota lists them separately and they share almost nothing but a badge and a silhouette. Both also use Icon, Design and Excel grade names, so if you are comparing quotes, check which car you are actually looking at.

What makes the C-HR+ interesting is range for the size. The Design manages 377 miles on the official test, which is a long way beyond most electric cars of this footprint, and it does it without the price or the bulk of something a class bigger. Add a 150kW rapid charge, a heat pump as standard on every version and Toyota's battery guarantee, and it is a very easy car to run.

The Three Versions

All three are front wheel drive. There is no all wheel drive C-HR+ in the UK, so if you see one quoted with two motors and over 340hp, that is a different market's car.

Icon

123kW (165bhp) on the smaller 57.7kWh battery. 284 miles, 11kW AC charging, 0 to 62mph in 8.4 seconds.

Design

165kW (221bhp) on the 77kWh battery. 377 miles on 18 inch wheels, 11kW AC, 0 to 62mph in 7.3 seconds. The one to have.

Excel

Same 165kW and 77kWh battery, but 347 miles on its 20 inch wheels. Gains the faster 22kW AC charger.

That 30 mile gap between Design and Excel is purely the wheels, so it is worth deciding whether you want the look or the range. On the DC side every version takes 150kW, giving 10 to 80 per cent in about 28 minutes. Battery pre-conditioning is standard and Toyota says it holds that charging time at temperatures as low as minus 10, which is the sort of claim that actually matters in February.

Space, and Being Straight About It

The boot holds 416 litres measured including the space under the deck board, which Toyota says takes two 82 litre suitcases. The rear seats split 60:40, though the backrests do not fold completely flat, and there is no storage under the bonnet, so the charging cables live in the boot.

Here is the thing to be honest about, because it is the one real criticism of this car and it comes from the reviewers rather than from us. What Car? gave it four stars instead of five and said plainly that the reason was "the lack of passenger and boot space", listing rear seat room as tight. Auto Express says the same, calling the boot small and oddly shaped and the rear space limited. The C-HR+ has a swooping roofline and it costs you headroom and luggage room. If it is mostly two of you with occasional passengers, none of that will bother you. If you have teenagers and a dog, look at the bZ4X, which is 160mm longer with a bigger boot, and we will price both.

Toyota's Battery Guarantee

This is genuinely one of the strongest in the industry and it is worth understanding properly. The battery itself carries an 8 year or 100,000 mile manufacturer warranty. On top of that, Toyota's Battery Care programme guarantees the battery will retain at least 70 per cent of its original capacity for up to 10 years or one million miles, whichever comes first.

The condition is the part people drop: that cover depends on an EV traction battery health check being carried out at each qualifying scheduled service by an authorised Toyota repairer. Miss the servicing and you lose it. The vehicle warranty works the same way, starting at 3 years or 60,000 miles and extending by 12 months or 10,000 miles with each eligible Toyota service, up to a maximum of 10 years or 100,000 miles.

C-HR+ on Business

As a fully electric car the C-HR+ sits in the lowest company car tax band, which is why it often works out very differently through a business than privately. Those bands change each tax year and are rising, so take the current figures from your accountant rather than from any website. Tell us which grade you are looking at and we will give you the official range and CO2 on that exact derivative alongside the rental. If the C-HR+ is more car than you need, the smaller Urban Cruiser sits a segment below it, and the rest of Toyota's electric range is worth comparing on the same mileage.

Toyota C-HR+ Leasing FAQs

No. The C-HR+ is a separate, fully electric SUV. The C-HR is a hybrid and plug-in hybrid. Toyota lists them as two different models and they share very little beyond the name and the general shape. Confusingly both use Icon, Design and Excel grade names.

Up to 377 miles for the Design on 18 inch wheels, 347 miles for the Excel on its 20 inch wheels, and 284 miles for the entry Icon with the smaller battery. Cold weather and motorway speeds reduce all of those, as with any electric car.

Up to 150kW on a DC rapid charger, which is 10 to 80 per cent in about 28 minutes. Battery pre-conditioning is standard, and Toyota says it holds that charging time at temperatures as low as minus 10 degrees. On AC, Icon and Design take 11kW and Excel takes 22kW.

Not in the UK. All three UK versions are front wheel drive. A twin motor version exists in other markets but Toyota has no plans to bring it here, so if you see one quoted with over 340hp it is not a UK car.

416 litres, measured by Toyota including the space under the deck board, which it says takes two large suitcases. The rear seats split 60:40 but do not fold completely flat, and there is no storage under the bonnet, so charging cables travel in the boot.

The battery is covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles. Separately, Toyota's Battery Care programme guarantees it will keep at least 70 per cent of its original capacity for up to 10 years or one million miles, whichever comes first, provided an EV battery health check is carried out at each qualifying scheduled service by an authorised Toyota repairer.

Size, mainly. The bZ4X is 160mm longer on a 100mm longer wheelbase, sits higher and has a bigger boot at 452 litres against 416. It is also the only one of the two offered with all wheel drive in the UK. The C-HR+ has the longer official range in every comparable grade.

LetsLease is a credit broker rather than the lender. We arrange the agreement and place it with a funder such as Lex Autolease, Novuna, Ayvens or Santander, and that funder owns the vehicle and holds the agreement with you. Because we work across several funders rather than one, we can compare how each prices the same car.
