Why Lease a Toyota Yaris Cross?

The Yaris Cross does the most useful thing a small car can do: it is genuinely cheap to run without asking anything of you. It is a full self charging hybrid, so there is no cable and nothing to remember, and it returns up to 64.1mpg on the official test with CO2 from 100g/km. It is also a Toyota, which still counts for something on a three or four year contract. If you want the same hybrid system in a lower, cheaper hatchback, that is the Yaris.

It was facelifted in 2026, and the most important change is under the bonnet: the Hybrid 130 powertrain is now standard on every version and the old entry level hybrid has gone. So whichever grade you choose, you get the more powerful system. A lot of listings and reviews still show two engine options, and they are out of date.

The Hybrid 130 Powertrain

A 1.5 litre three cylinder petrol engine making 91 DIN hp, a 62kW electric motor and a small battery, giving a total system output of 130 DIN hp (129bhp) through an e-CVT. It is a full self charging hybrid: it recharges itself under braking and on the move, runs on electricity alone at low speed and in traffic, and never needs plugging in.

Four wheel drive is offered as AWD-i, which adds a small motor on the rear axle, and it is available on the Excel grade only. The GR Sport is front wheel drive, which surprises people given how it looks.

Being straight about the performance, because a test drive will tell you anyway: it is not quick. Auto Express puts 0 to 62mph at 10.7 seconds and says plainly that performance is not the engine's strong point, noting that newer rivals offer more powerful hybrids and more standard kit. In town, where this car will spend most of its life, 130hp in something this light feels perfectly brisk. Joining a fast motorway with four people aboard is where you notice it. If outright pace matters to you more than running costs, this is not the car to choose, and we would rather say so now.

Running Costs by Grade

Because the wheels and the drivetrain change between grades, so do the official figures, and the spread is wide enough to matter on a company car:

  • Icon, 100g/km and 64.1mpg. The cheapest to run and the best company car choice.
  • Design, 101g/km and 64.1mpg. Effectively the same, with more kit.
  • Excel front wheel drive, 109g/km and 58.8mpg. Excel AWD-i, 115 to 116g/km and 55.3mpg.
  • GR SPORT, 110g/km and 58.8mpg.

So choosing four wheel drive costs you around 15g/km against the entry grade, and roughly 9mpg. Company car bands change each tax year and are set by CO2, so if this is going on a business take the current figures from your accountant and we will confirm the official CO2 on the exact derivative you are quoted. If tax is the deciding factor, the fully electric Urban Cruiser sits in the lowest band of all and is a similar size.

What the Facelift Changed

Outside, a new honeycomb grille, redesigned LED headlamps with C-shaped daytime running lights standard across the range, new wheels, and three new colours in Precious Bronze, Persian Salt and Storm Grey. The GR SPORT gets its own front bumper with side pods, 18 inch machined alloys, two tone paint and retuned suspension and steering.

Inside, platinum coloured door and dashboard inserts, sports style front seats moved down from Excel to Design, ambient lighting and a wireless charging tray standard on Design and above, a power tailgate standard on Excel, and partial leather in Toyota's SakuraTouch material on Excel. On screens, Icon gets a 9 inch touchscreen and Excel steps up to a 10.5 inch Toyota Smart Connect system with a 12.3 inch instrument display. Boot space is 350 litres measured to the tonneau cover, 460 litres to the roof and 1,097 litres with the 40:20:40 rear seats folded.

Warranty and the Hybrid Battery

Every new Toyota starts with 3 years or 60,000 miles. Toyota's Service Activated Warranty then adds a further 12 months or 10,000 miles each time the car has an eligible full or interim service at an authorised Toyota dealer, up to a maximum of 10 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.

The hybrid battery is covered separately and rather generously: a new 12 month hybrid battery warranty is applied with every service at a Toyota dealer, up to the fifteenth year of registration, with no mileage limit stated. One correction worth making, because it is repeated everywhere: Toyota's Battery Care programme, the one with the million mile battery health guarantee, applies only to its fully electric cars and expressly excludes hybrids. It does not apply to the Yaris Cross. What the Yaris Cross has instead is the fifteen year hybrid battery arrangement above, which for most drivers is the more useful of the two anyway. The same cover applies across Toyota's self charging hybrids, including the C-HR and the RAV4 if you need something larger.

Toyota Yaris Cross Leasing FAQs

One. Since the 2026 facelift the Hybrid 130 powertrain is standard on every version and the old entry level hybrid has been dropped. A lot of listings still show two options and are out of date.

No. It is a full self charging hybrid, not a plug-in. It recharges itself under braking and on the move and runs on electricity alone at low speeds and in traffic. There is no cable and nothing to remember.

Yes, as AWD-i, which adds a small electric motor on the rear axle. It is offered on the Excel grade only. The GR SPORT, despite how it looks, is front wheel drive.

Up to 64.1mpg and 100g/km of CO2 on the Icon grade, falling to 58.8mpg and 109g/km on the front wheel drive Excel and 55.3mpg and around 115g/km on the Excel AWD-i. The larger wheels and the four wheel drive are what cost you.

Not very. 0 to 62mph takes 10.7 seconds, and reviewers are clear that performance is not this car's strong point. Around town it feels perfectly brisk, but joining a fast road with a full car is where you notice it.

350 litres measured to the tonneau cover, 460 litres to the roof, and 1,097 litres with the 40:20:40 rear seats folded. Toyota does not publish a separate figure for the four wheel drive version.

A new 12 month hybrid battery warranty is applied with every service at a Toyota dealer, up to the fifteenth year of registration, with no mileage limit stated. Note that Toyota's Battery Care programme, the one with the million mile guarantee, applies only to fully electric Toyotas and expressly excludes hybrids, so it does not apply here.

LetsLease is a credit broker rather than the lender. We arrange the agreement and place it with a funder such as Lex Autolease, Novuna, Ayvens or Santander, and that funder owns the vehicle and holds the agreement with you. Because we work across several funders rather than one, we can compare how each prices the same car.
