Why Lease a Volvo ES90?

Because of the charging, more than the range. The ES90 is the first Volvo built on 800 volt architecture, and it will accept up to 350kW on a DC charger. Most electric cars at this size peak somewhere between 150kW and 250kW, so on a long run the ES90 spends less time plugged in to add the same miles. The range is good too, at up to 432 miles, but the charging speed is the part that changes the experience.

It is a large, quiet, low slung saloon rather than another SUV, which in 2026 makes it unusual in its own line-up. If you want the same powertrain thinking in a seven seat SUV, that is the EX90. Against other badges, the BMW i5 and the Audi e-tron GT are the cars most people weigh against it.

Which Volvo ES90 Should You Choose?

Derivative Battery Range Power 0 to 62 Max DC charge
Single Motor Extended Range Plus92kWh413 miles333hp6.6s310kW
Single Motor Extended Range Ultra92kWh407 miles333hp6.6s310kW
Twin Motor Ultra106kWh432 miles456hp5.4s350kW
Twin Motor Performance Ultra106kWh432 miles680hp4.0s350kW

There are four derivatives and only two trims, and the way they are paired matters. Both Twin Motors are Ultra only, so if you want four wheel drive you are taking the top trim with it. There is no Plus Twin Motor. Equally, if Plus is the trim you want, the Single Motor Extended Range is your only choice, and on 20 inch wheels it is the longest range single motor car at 413 miles.

Here is the part that catches people out, and it is worth a minute. The Ultra single motor has less range than the Plus, 407 miles against 413, on exactly the same 92kWh battery. Nothing is wrong with it: Ultra comes on 21 inch wheels where Plus is on 20s, and bigger wheels cost range. The Twin Motor Ultra then goes back up to 432 miles because it has the larger 106kWh pack. Our view is that the Twin Motor Ultra is the sweet spot, because it is the longest range ES90 and the quickest of the sensible ones. If range is the whole point, the Plus on 20 inch wheels is the efficient one.

What Does 800 Volt Architecture Actually Mean?

It means the car can take more power from a rapid charger without overheating, so it charges faster. Most electric cars use a 400 volt system. Doubling the voltage lets the same current carry twice the power, which is why the ES90 peaks at 350kW on the Twin Motor cars and 310kW on the Single Motor, where a typical 400 volt car of this size tops out well below that.

In practice it only pays off on a charger that can actually deliver it, and the UK network has a limited number of those. Plugged into a 400 volt DC charger the ES90 accepts 120kW, which is still respectable but is not the headline figure. So the honest version is this: the 800 volt system is a real advantage if you do long motorway journeys and use the fastest chargers, and makes very little difference if you charge at home overnight and rarely go far. Tell us which of those you are and we will tell you whether it is worth paying for.

Volvo ES90 Boot Space and Dimensions

Measurement Figure
Boot, seats up442 litres
Boot, seats down922 litres
Boot, seats down, loaded to the roof1,445 litres
Front compartment under the bonnet22 litres
Towing, braked, Single Motor1,600kg
Towing, braked, Twin Motor2,000kg
Top speed112mph
Seats and doors5 and 5

Being straight with you, the boot is the weakest part of the car. 442 litres is less than a BMW i5 or an Audi A6 e-tron manages, and the load area is long and shallow rather than deep, so a tall suitcase is harder to fit than the number suggests. If you regularly carry bulky things, the EX90 or the XC60 will serve you better. What you get in exchange is a car that is quieter, more comfortable and considerably more efficient on a motorway than any SUV in the range, which for a lot of drivers is the right trade. The 22 litre compartment under the bonnet takes the charging cables.

How Safe Is the Volvo ES90?

The ES90 has not been tested by Euro NCAP, so it does not hold a rating. We are telling you that rather than quoting a five star score from a different Volvo, because a rating belongs to the car that was crashed and nothing else. If you see an ES90 described as five star rated, that figure has come from somewhere it does not belong.

What we can tell you is what is fitted. The ES90 carries Volvo's current driver assistance hardware, and the car was engineered to the same internal standards as the EX90, which was tested in November 2025 and scored five stars with 92 per cent for adult occupant protection. That is context rather than a rating for the ES90, and we would rather give you the distinction than blur it. If Euro NCAP publishes a result, it will appear here.

Watch Out for Older ES90 Figures

The ES90 is new enough that the first published figures have already been superseded, and quite a lot of what is written about it online describes a car you can no longer order. The earlier specification listed 449hp and 517hp outputs, a separate 111kWh battery for the Performance version, and a 424 litre boot. The current car has 456hp and 680hp, the Performance shares the 106kWh pack, and the boot is 442 litres. Reviews written earlier in 2026 are quoting the older set in good faith. Everything on this page is taken from the current UK specification document, and if you want to see the source we will send it to you.

Leasing a Volvo ES90

Two numbers drive most of your monthly cost: the initial rental and your annual mileage. A larger initial rental brings the monthly figure down, and your mileage sets the contract, so be realistic rather than optimistic about it. Excess mileage is charged at the end and on a car of this size it is not trivial.

A large electric saloon is close to the strongest case there is for business leasing or salary sacrifice, because fully electric company cars attract far lower Benefit in Kind company car tax than petrol or diesel, and the saving scales with the value of the car. The rates are set per tax year on a published schedule, so check where they stand before you commit. We are a credit broker rather than a tax adviser, so your accountant should confirm your own position.

There is a second reason leasing suits this car specifically. It is a brand new model in a segment where used values are still unsettled, and on a lease the funder carries that risk rather than you. Our guide to electric car residual values explains how that is priced in, and our electric against petrol comparison works through the running cost side.

Volvo ES90 Leasing FAQs

Up to 432 miles on either Twin Motor version, which use the larger 106kWh battery. The Single Motor Extended Range is rated at 413 miles in Plus trim on 20 inch wheels and 407 miles in Ultra trim on 21 inch wheels, using the 92kWh battery. Those are official WLTP figures.

Up to 350kW on the Twin Motor cars and up to 310kW on the Single Motor, which is quicker than most electric cars of this size. That is because the ES90 is the first Volvo built on 800 volt architecture. On a 400 volt DC charger it accepts 120kW instead, so the headline figure needs one of the fastest chargers to be realised.

Either Twin Motor, at 432 miles, because they carry the larger 106kWh battery. Among the Single Motor cars, the Plus has more range than the Ultra, 413 miles against 407, because Plus runs 20 inch wheels and Ultra runs 21s.

Only in Twin Motor form, and both Twin Motors are offered in Ultra trim only. The Single Motor Extended Range is rear wheel drive. There is no Plus trim Twin Motor, so four wheel drive and top trim come together on this car.

442 litres with the rear seats up and 922 litres with them folded, rising to 1,445 litres if you load to the roof. There is also a 22 litre compartment under the bonnet for charging cables. It is smaller than some rivals at this size and the load area is long and shallow, so measure against what you actually carry.

No. The ES90 has not been assessed by Euro NCAP, so it holds no rating. Any five star figure you see attached to it has come from a different Volvo. If a result is published we will add it.

The ES90 is a low slung saloon with five seats and the EX90 is a tall SUV with seven. They share Volvo's current electric thinking, including the 800 volt charging on the newest EX90. The ES90 is the quieter and more efficient of the two on a motorway, and the EX90 is the one to have if you need the seats or the load space.

Yes. The Single Motor Extended Range is rated at 1,600kg braked and both Twin Motor versions at 2,000kg braked. Check the figure for your specific trailer against the vehicle's own plated weights before you commit.

In Chengdu, China. Volvo has been Chinese owned since Geely acquired it in 2010, and builds cars in Sweden, Belgium, China and the United States depending on the model. The ES90 is one of the Chinese built cars.

Because the specification changed between model years. The earlier car was listed at 449hp and 517hp with a separate 111kWh battery for the Performance version. The current car is 456hp and 680hp with the Performance sharing the 106kWh pack. Reviews published earlier in 2026 are describing the older specification.

It is one of the stronger cases, because fully electric company cars attract far lower Benefit in Kind company car tax than petrol or diesel and the saving grows with the value of the car. The rates are set per tax year and rise on a published schedule, so check the current figure and ask your accountant to confirm your own position before you decide.

LetsLease is a credit broker rather than the lender. We arrange the agreement and place it with a funder such as Lex Autolease, Novuna, Ayvens or Santander, and that funder owns the vehicle and holds the agreement with you. Because we work across several funders rather than one, we can compare how each of them prices the same car.
