Why Lease an Alfa Romeo Junior?

The Junior is Alfa Romeo's small SUV, and it is the first genuinely affordable way into the brand for a long time. There are two very different cars wearing the badge: a mild hybrid petrol called the Ibrida, and a fully electric one called the Elettrica, which at the top of the range becomes a 280hp Veloce with a proper mechanical limited slip differential.

One naming point first, because it causes real confusion. This car was announced as the Milano and renamed before it reached customers, after an Italian ruling that an Italian place name could not be used on a car built in Poland. It is the Junior. If you are reading a review of an Alfa Romeo Milano, you are reading about this car under a name it no longer has. It sits below the Tonale and the Stelvio in the Alfa Romeo range.

Alfa Romeo Junior Ibrida or Elettrica: Which to Choose?

Alfa Romeo uses the Italian words, which looks stylish and makes the range slightly harder to read than it needs to be. Ibrida is the hybrid, Elettrica is the electric one.

Junior Ibrida

1.2 litre three cylinder petrol, 145hp, front wheel drive, six speed dual clutch automatic. A 48V mild hybrid, with a 0.9kWh battery and a 21kW motor inside the gearbox. 415 litre boot.

Junior Elettrica

156hp and 260Nm, front wheel drive. 54kWh gross and 51kWh usable, 255 miles WLTP, 100kW DC rapid charging and 20 to 80 per cent in under half an hour.

Elettrica 280 Veloce

280hp and 345Nm, still front wheel drive, with a mechanical Torsen limited slip differential as standard. 207 miles WLTP. The one Alfa enthusiasts care about.

Elettrica 280 Veloce280hp54kWh gross, 51kWh usable207 milesUp to 400 litres

Two things to be clear about. The Ibrida is a mild hybrid, not a full or self charging hybrid. It cannot be plugged in and it does not run meaningful distances on electricity. Alfa Romeo's own material describes it only as a "petrol-electric hybrid", which is where a lot of the confusion starts. And the Veloce is electric only, so there is no fast petrol Junior.

Alfa Romeo Junior Veloce: Power, Range and Suspension

This is the version that justifies the badge on the bonnet, and the reason is not the 280hp. It is the mechanical Torsen limited slip differential, fitted as standard, which is the same unit used in the Abarth 600e. Almost no small electric car has one, and it is what stops 280hp through the front wheels turning into a tug of war on a wet roundabout.

The rest of the changes are real engineering rather than decals. The suspension is lowered 25mm with revised geometry and hydraulic bumpstops, the front brakes are 380mm discs with four piston monobloc calipers, and it runs 20 inch wheels on performance rubber. The trade is range: 207 miles against the standard Elettrica's 255. Worth knowing that an earlier provisional figure of 215 miles still circulates, and the current official number is 207.

Alfa Romeo Junior Trim Levels and Boot Space

On the petrol side the range runs Ibrida, Ibrida Ti and Ibrida Sport Speciale. On the electric side, Elettrica, Elettrica Ti, Elettrica Sport Speciale and the Elettrica 280 Veloce. Some older reviews claim the Ibrida comes in one trim only, which is out of date.

Boot space is 415 litres on the Ibrida and up to 400 litres on the Elettrica, with five seats and a 60/40 split rear bench. There is no all wheel drive Junior in the UK: a Q4 version exists in other markets, but Alfa Romeo UK lists Q4 only against the Tonale.

Customers always ask how it differs from its relatives, so here is the straight answer. It is built in Poland on the same underpinnings as the Jeep Avenger, the Fiat 600, the Peugeot 2008 and the Vauxhall Mokka. What Alfa Romeo has changed is mostly suspension and steering, plus the Veloce's differential and brakes. If you want the shared platform at a lower price, those cars exist. If you want the one that has had work done to how it drives, this is it.

Alfa Romeo Junior Warranty, Euro NCAP and Company Car Tax

Here is the one caveat we want you to have before you sign rather than after, because almost every write up of this car gets it wrong. Alfa Romeo's warranty is three years from registration, and the mileage terms change part way through: unlimited for the first two years, then capped at 60,000 miles in year three. Both Auto Express and What Car? describe it as three years unlimited mileage, and Alfa Romeo's own warranty page says otherwise. If you are taking a three year lease at 20,000 miles a year, that is a cap you could actually reach, so it is worth building into the decision. Paintwork is covered for three years and corrosion for eight. The traction battery carries eight years of cover, and Alfa Romeo UK does not publish a mileage figure alongside it, so we will not invent one.

On safety, the honest answer is that the Junior does not have a Euro NCAP rating. It has not been tested. Some sources speculate about what it might score and we are not going to repeat a guess as a fact, nor borrow a result from one of its relatives.

For a business lease, the Elettrica is the one that makes sense, because a fully electric car sits in the lowest company car tax band while the mild hybrid Ibrida does not get anywhere near it. Those bands change each tax year, so take the current figures from your accountant. Tell us your mileage and whether you can charge at home and we will show you the two side by side.

Alfa Romeo Junior Leasing FAQs

Yes. It was announced as the Milano and renamed the Junior before it reached customers, after an Italian ruling that an Italian place name could not be used on a car built in Poland. Alfa Romeo UK calls it the Junior, so a review of a Milano is a review of this car under a name it no longer carries.

No, it is a 48V mild hybrid, with a 0.9kWh battery and a 21kW motor built into the dual clutch gearbox. It cannot be plugged in and it does not run meaningful distances on electricity. Alfa Romeo's own material calls it a petrol-electric hybrid without using the word mild, which is where the confusion comes from.

255 miles WLTP from a battery of 54kWh gross and 51kWh usable, with a 100kW DC rapid charging peak and 20 to 80 per cent in under half an hour. The 280 Veloce manages 207 miles because of its power, wheels and tyres.

Not just the 280hp. It has a mechanical Torsen limited slip differential as standard, the same unit as the Abarth 600e, which almost no small electric car offers. The suspension is lowered 25mm with revised geometry, the front brakes are 380mm discs with four piston monobloc calipers, and it runs 20 inch wheels.

Not in the UK. A Q4 all wheel drive version exists in other markets, but Alfa Romeo UK offers Q4 only on the Tonale. Every UK Junior, including the 280hp Veloce, is front wheel drive.

No. It has not been tested, so there is no star rating. Some sources speculate about what it might achieve, and we are not going to repeat a guess as a fact or borrow a result from one of its Stellantis relatives.

Three years from registration, but the mileage terms change part way through: unlimited for the first two years, then capped at 60,000 miles in year three. Several major publications describe it as three years unlimited mileage, and Alfa Romeo's own warranty page contradicts them. The traction battery is covered for eight years, with no mileage figure published by Alfa Romeo UK.

It shares its underpinnings and its Polish factory with them, along with the Peugeot 2008 and Vauxhall Mokka. What Alfa Romeo changed is mostly the suspension and steering, plus the Veloce's limited slip differential and brakes. If you want the platform for less money those cars exist, and if you want the version that has had work done to how it drives, this is it.

LetsLease is a credit broker rather than the lender. We arrange the agreement and place it with a funder such as Lex Autolease, Novuna, Ayvens or Santander, and that funder owns the vehicle and holds the agreement with you. Because we work across several funders rather than one, we can compare how each prices the same car.
