Why Lease the Hyundai Santa Fe?

The Hyundai Santa Fe is the largest SUV Hyundai sells in the UK and one of the few genuine seven seaters in its class. The current generation abandoned the rounded shapes of its predecessors for a boxy, upright design, and while that split opinion on looks, it is the reason the cabin is as usable as it is: a squared-off roofline gives real headroom in the third row rather than the token space most rivals offer.

Every version uses the same 1.6 litre T-GDi Smartstream petrol engine, electrified two ways. The full hybrid charges itself and needs nothing from you. The plug-in hybrid adds a larger battery you charge from a socket. Seven seats are standard, with the top Calligraphy trim configured as a six seater instead.

Hyundai's five year unlimited mileage warranty covers the whole of a typical lease, with the battery covered separately for eight years or 100,000 miles. If the Santa Fe is more car than you need, compare the Hyundai Tucson or the smaller Hyundai Kona.

Hyundai Santa Fe Engines and Running Costs

The full hybrid produces 215PS and 367Nm and comes with front or all-wheel drive. It charges its own battery from the engine and from braking, so there is nothing to plug in and nothing to remember, which makes it the sensible choice for anyone without a driveway charger. The plug-in hybrid uses the same engine with a larger battery and all-wheel drive, producing 253PS, and offers an official electric range of 33.6 miles.

That 33.6 mile figure is the one honest weak point on the specification. Several rivals now offer plug-in hybrids with 43 to 56 miles of official electric range, and a shorter range means more of your driving falls back on the petrol engine. It is enough for a typical commute if you charge every night, and if you cannot charge reliably the full hybrid is the better car of the two, because an unplugged plug-in hybrid carries a battery it never uses. Boot space runs from 621 to 628 litres with the third row folded, depending on trim.

Hyundai Santa Fe Trim Levels

Santa Fe Premium

The entry trim, and generously equipped by class standards, with the twin-screen dashboard, smartphone connectivity and Hyundai's driver assistance suite included.

Santa Fe Ultimate

Adds the comfort and technology upgrades most families actually notice day to day, sitting between the entry car and the flagship.

Santa Fe Calligraphy

The flagship, with the most premium interior materials and equipment. Note that Calligraphy is configured as a six seater rather than a seven, so the top trim costs you a seat.

Ultimate is the one to have for most families. It brings the equipment that matters without the Calligraphy's six seat layout, which is a genuine loss if you bought a Santa Fe specifically to carry seven people.

Leasing the Hyundai Santa Fe

A large seven seat SUV is a good candidate for leasing, because the need is usually temporary. Families need seven seats for a defined stretch of years and then stop needing them, and a fixed term agreement matches that shape better than owning does. Big SUVs also lose more money in absolute terms as they depreciate, and on a lease the funder carries that rather than you.

For company car drivers the plug-in hybrid attracts lower company car tax than the full hybrid because of its lower emissions and electric range, though announced changes will alter how plug-in hybrids are banded later this decade. Rules change each tax year and depend on your circumstances, so confirm the position with your accountant before ordering on business contract hire.

Choose your mileage allowance honestly, since a seven seater tends to become the family logistics vehicle and covers more miles than the car it replaced. You can also compare personal leasing options or the wider electric and hybrid range.

Hyundai Santa Fe Leasing FAQs

Yes, and it is one of the better ones in its class. The boxy roofline of the current generation gives genuine headroom in the third row rather than the token space many rivals offer. Seven seats are standard, with one exception: the top Calligraphy trim is configured as a six seater, so the flagship costs you a seat.

Both are available, using the same 1.6 litre T-GDi engine. The full hybrid produces 215PS, comes with front or all-wheel drive and charges itself, so there is nothing to plug in. The plug-in hybrid produces 253PS, is all-wheel drive and has a larger battery you charge from a socket.

33.6 miles on the official figure. That is enough for a typical commute if you charge every night, but it is shorter than several rivals, which now offer between 43 and 56 miles. If you cannot charge reliably, the full hybrid is the better choice, because a plug-in hybrid that is never plugged in carries a battery it never uses and burns more fuel than the self-charging version.

Between 621 and 628 litres with the third row folded, depending on trim. That is generous for the class. As with any seven seater, the figure drops substantially with all seven seats in use, so ask for the seats-up capacity if you will regularly carry seven people and their luggage.

Ultimate for most families. It adds the comfort and technology upgrades you notice day to day without moving to Calligraphy, which is configured as a six seater. Premium is well equipped as an entry point, and Calligraphy is the one to pick only if interior quality matters more to you than the seventh seat.

Hyundai's five year warranty with unlimited mileage, which is unusual and genuinely useful for a high mileage family car. The hybrid battery is covered separately for eight years or 100,000 miles. On a typical two to four year lease the whole agreement sits comfortably inside that cover.
